The fundraising barbecue season is coming to a close as the weather grows colder, but the skies brightened for one more day for Western Financial's "Krayons for Kids" barbecue.
The Drumheller Branch has been collecting school supplies all month for the cause.
"It is our second annual event. We call it Krayons for Kids. What we are doing is we are collecting new school supplies so we can split them between St. Anthony's and Greentree Schools and then they can distribute thenew school supplies to get kids in need at each school," explained Branch Manager Roxanne Clark.
As school lists become longer and longer, the local Branch seen a need our local school systems and have been collecting donations all month long.
"What we have found is that by donating them directly to the school, the teacher in the classroom who have a lot more intimate relationship with the kids, can identify which kids have a need without people really put them on the spot, or having people come out and ask for what they need, which sometimes people are a little to proud too do," continued Clark.
In many cases, younger children go through many school supplies in a year, and many struggle with replacing or keeping up with the costs.
"Mostly it is just replacing items like the backpacks and lunch kits. You know, paper, pens, scissors, calculators, really the list is endless. So we are happy to collect all of it, and we are very happy to distribute it."
The barbecue held today raised $450 in addition to the vast amount of school supplies collected.
The branch also matched all funds raised from the barbecue totaling the fundraiser at $900.
