Update Jan. 18/2018: The Wayne Community Association has accepted a cheque from the Drumhelelr AElks Lodge #54 for $2,500 for the new playground fund.

The Wayne Community Association checked a big item off their to-do list this year. They can now give tax-deductible receipts to donors who need them at tax time, something the group made a priority in 2017 given their large fundraising project.

Karel Stojan is with the Wayne Community Association. He explained that Wayne has been in need of a new playground for a long time.

"Our existing playground is from the 1940s and it's used quite a bit out there -- we have a lot of families that camp out there -- and we're actively fundraising for that goal."

Wayne's population fluctuates wildly depending on the season. In the winter, less than 30 people call the community home, but in the summer, hundreds of people flock to the area to camp. The old playground is aging and unappealing, the exact opposite of what the new playground will be.

With less than 30 people in the community, how do you raise enough money for an entire playground? Stojan said they had a bit of luck when the playground company came out to have a look.

"We had the folks come out near Edmonton and someone backed out into the playground so it came to us at a bit of a special price."

Fundraising is going well, thanks again, to the Association's ability to issue tax-deductible receipts.

"This [playground] is going to be about $58,000 dollars," said Stojan. "We've given the deposit of half of that and we've actively fundraised over $47,000."

To fundraise the remaining money, the Association is holding a raffle worth $1,000 until July 1.
