The Drumheller Cemetery is about to expand.Town Council has approved spending $165,000 to open a third area for gravesites.
"We're looking to do some work to level out some of the hills and valleys in the cemetery, sort of on the west end of it," explained CAO Darryl Drohomerski. "That'll be the third and possibly last phase, but it all depends on how much land we have."
"We did some work last year, but we had on the books to do a Phase Three expansion," he elaborated. "Basically, Phase Two is all of the area at the south end of the cemetery and then Phase Three is sort of on the hills, again on the west and a little bit to the south of the existing plot areas."
Drohomerski pointed out that Council had approved $150,000 for cemetery expansion, but the lowest bid received from contractors is ten per cent higher when all costs are taken into account. On Monday, August 20 councilors agreed to chip in the extra money from reserves and hire Northridge Contracting Ltd.
"You want to make sure you actually have space before you need the space," advised Drohomerski. "We knew that we were filling up a little bit with respect to the existing plots. Part of the normal course of cemetery maintenance is making sure that you've got enough space for people to have their final resting place."
