Spring is that time when everyone decides to get rid of old junk in their homes and garages.
The Household Hazardous Waste Collection starts on May 1 and runs through to May 12.
"For the AHW roundup, we want to collect all of the household hazardous goods; that includes old paints, fertilizers, chemicals, prescription drugs, oils, greases and things of that nature comes out to the AHW roundup to get properly disposed," outlined Tammy Nygaard, Landfill Operations Manager.
Unfortunately because of the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, staff are not allowed to go out and pick up these hazardous materials.
"They can pick up paint because normally most of the paint is latex, but the household goods we're not allowed to transport," Nygaard explained.
So, when can someone bring their hazardous goods to the landfill?
"It's Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Wednesday nights it's until 7:00 p.m. and of course we're open 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays. People can come here anytime during our operating hours, tell the person at the scale what you got, they'll direct you and there is no charge. It is only household that we are allowed to accept," she noted.
Nygaard wanted to express that if you come across any unknown hazardous materials, take extra precautions.
"If you come across an unknown, and unfortunately some do put things into odd containers, just mark it unknown if you don't know what it is and we'll handle it properly. If you don't know what it is, don't sniff it or try to smell it, that's really not a good plan at all."
