In June 2017, a tornado touched down just outside of Three Hills, Alberta.

The tornado caused some damage to buildings and one non-life threatening injury, but a Three Hills resident also became a viral sensation.

Theunis Wessels, also known as the Lawnmower Man, was out mowing his lawn during the tornado when his wife Cecilia snapped the photo.

"I actually saw that coming, the shot was just taken perfectly of me going in the opposite direction mowing the lawn. It looks like I wasn't aware of it, but I definitely saw it when it was coming about and the full grown tornado," explained Theunis Wessels.

Wessels wife was taking a few shots of Mother Nature's work to send back home to family and friends.

"She was taking a few shots, just to put some perspective to the picture itself. I think that's why she got me in it was for my friends and family in South Africa, just because they've never seen something like that as we're not used to tornadoes in South Africa," noted Wessels.

The photo instantly went viral and was shared by many on social media platforms, as well as spoken about on televised news casts.

"It's interesting how significant and quick anything can get through the Internet and how quickly things can go viral. In less than three days we spoke in contact with across the world from Asia to North America, South America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Africa," Wessels outlined.

After the photo of Wessels mowing his lawn went viral, a photo of him in the Three Hills Canada Day parade soared the Internet.

Wessels was approached by the Historical Society in Three Hills to be part of their float for Canada's big birthday.

"They wanted to do something unique to celebrate the time and they said 'we would be honoured to have you on our float. I told them it would be fine, but to let me know what to do and they said to wear the same clothes, sunglasses, bring your lawnmower and don't worry about the rest," concluded Wessels.
