For one Drumheller school, the event is extra special. Gavin Makse is Director of Athletics at St. Anthony's School.
"This marks our 14th year for St. Anthony's School," he noted. "The Terry Fox National School Run sent us an email with our totals over the last 13 years and we have raised $117,592.76 for cancer research in Terry's name."
The run is perhaps Makse's favourite event of the school year in that it involves students, teachers, administration staff and even members of the community. He also likes the cause.
"They do have a very good reputation with fundraising," he told Drum FM. "Eighty-two cents from every dollar raised goes directly to cancer research."
St. Anthony's students, from K-Grade 12, will make the walk along North Dinosaur Trail into Midland and back on Thursday, September 27.
"We all dress in our school colours and we all do it together; and it's tough to do things, especially in a K-12 school, altogether at once," stated Makse. "Parents can join in and people in the community, and it's only for an hour. As Terry said, even if you give a dollar you're making a difference."
