On Saturday, Nov. 18, the Sunshine and Hillsview Lodge held its annual Strawberry tea fundraiser.

The fundraiser is a major event for the Lodge -- not just because it brings in money, but because many of the residents participate in providing goods and treats for attendees.

Activities Coordinator Penny Head was the main organizer of this year's event.

"It is our main fundraiser for the activities for the year. This is what pays for craft supplies. It pays for trips. It pays for us bringing in entertainment which we try to do a few times a month."

Head estimated that this year's event will draw in more money than in previous years.

"I hope to raise at least $4,000. We've got a very, very good turnout this year, so hopefully we're going to meet or beat!"

The event included cake, coffee, tea, a 50-50, an auction and a raffle. Attendees could also purchase Canada 150 t-shirts, baked goods and homemade crafts.

"The ladies work very hard all year, making crafts for the craft sale, and we have a bake table," explained Head. "And, we have the most wonderful raffle prizes this year. People were very, very kind with their donations."

Some of the raffle prizes included date night package for the Newcastle Hotel, as well as a gift certificate from the Heartwood Inn, a stand-up vacuum cleaner and a large nativity scene.
