On Sunday, March 17, 2019, the Drumheller RCMP got a call about a stolen vehicle from Sylvan Lake that had made its way to Drumheller.
"A vehicle was noted in the Walmart parking lot as stolen, it had some unique markers as I believe it was a work vehicle. A friend of the owner happened to see it and called us. It was actively parked there and the two occupants were inside Walmart at the time," explained Corporal Gerald Sherk of the Drumheller RCMP.
The RCMP arrived at the parked truck around 1 PM to apprehend the occupants.
"Our members were able to get to the parking lot and tried to box the vehicle in. The occupants rammed a parked vehicle to get away. In doing so they blew out one of the back tires, so it left quite the trail of smoke and debris which we were able to follow safely from a distance," continued Sherk. " At that point, they were driving extremely erratically and there are quite a few people on the road at one o'clock in the afternoon, so we were really concerned for the safety of other drivers."
The stolen vehicle then made its way out of Drumheller on Highway 56 North.
"The vehicle then continued up the North Hill on to highway 56 heading towards Three Hills. We were able to coordinate with the Three Hills detachment to have a spike belt deployed and it blew out the other three tires. After driving it for quite a ways on four rims the vehicle finally came to a stop and both occupants were taken into custody without further incident," concluded Sherk.
Between the two people who were taken into custody, they are facing numerous charges and breeches.
