The Canadian Badlands Passion Play took over the site on Drumheller's west end this past weekend as the first three of nine shows went ahead.
"The numbers were down a little bit, I think mostly because of the heat, but there were still 3,000 in for that opening weekend, so that's nice," reported Passion Play Executive Director Vance Neudorf. "Everybody, as far as the reviews go, are very positive on the changes and the way things have come together this year."
"Drumheller has this reputation for being hotter than -- Drumheller -- you know, some people say I don't want to come there," he speculated. "For a 6:00 p.m. show, there's people walking out of there at the end of the show going gee, I wish I'd brought a sweater."
The opening weekend of the 2017 Passion Play was also special in that Sunday's show was the 150th performance since the play started more than 20 years ago.
"People came out for a little party and we had eight great big Canada birthday cakes and cherry lemonade," recalled Neudorf. "Royal and Lewis and Keith Hamm were on stage: we had a great time."
There are six more performances in 2017, sprad out over the next two weekends. For show times and other information, follow this link.
