With the rain and snow we had last week, icy patches have developed on some of Drumheller sidewalks.
There are many that use salt or a salt de-icer to remove the ice from the walkway but it may be harming the concrete sidewalk. The issue is that the salt removes the top coat of the concrete and the finish wears off quickly if salt is used.
"The de-icer stuff is better than salt. I would just stay away from all of that stuff and just use sand." recommends Rod Knelsen from Tanas Concrete.
"Conditions are rough on exterior concrete regardless because of season changes so I would stay away from that stuff."
The answer may be to use a little bit of sand to protect your concrete driveway and sidewalk. It will save your sidewalk in the long run and protect the surface as well.
