RCMP members hope to be exchanging four wheels for two wheels in downtown Drumheller this summer.
Corporal Steven Lloyd told 99.5 Drum FM they want to have more bike patrols.
"We've already done one, we have members trained and we're just getting our manpower lined up to be able to do that this summer. Especially with the increased car traffic in the downtown core, it's actually faster if you can be on foot or on a bicycle."
"It's more effective than being in a police car," he continued. "To take your car and park and then walk around is probably the number one thing you can do. People see you and you're approachable as well."
Lloyd pointed out there can be a lot of demands on the detachment, including the appearance of one or more members in red serge for the tourists, but he thinks they'll also have a couple officers in shorts and helmets.
"We're hoping so, but it's one of those things that depends on call volume versus manpower," he explained. "We do have a very large area that we have to look after, so if we can get guys out on the bikes. They're trained and willing to do it, everybody likes to do it, it's just a matter of when our call volume allows for it."
