It could be Wednesday before some people in east central Alberta get the power back on.

Thousands of customers were knocked off line by Monday's winter storm, which downed lines over an area stretching east of Drumheller all the way into Saskatchewan.

"Much more than 5,000," remarked Alan Gano, District Manager for the Southeast Region for ATCO Electric. "We're at about that 2,500 mark right now and we're making good progress today."

"The crews that we had called yesterday were able to be on the ground today," he continued. "One of the biggest challenges today is access. Hanna-east, we're having difficulty getting in there to restore power."

The problem is the power crews often have to wait for a snowplough to get them to the problem spots, and the ploughs are busy clearing other roads as well. That said, Gano said they're throwing everything at it that they can.

"A couple helicopters in the air trying to access spots, so once we do have ploughs in front of us, then we know what to expect."

He thinks the vast majority of ATCO Electric customers should be back up sometime today.
