A brand new physical literacy package has just been released through the Drumheller and Area Early Childhood Development Coalition.
"The physical literacy backpack was developed as part of one of the five core elements in the early childhood development. The five core elements are social competence, emotional maturity, physical health and well being, language and cognitive development and communication skills and general knowledge," stated Debbie LaPlante with DECD.
The program was created as a hands on play resource that could be accessed by everyone in the community.
The Backpack program is designed to be used for children from birth until five years old, but LaPlante assured all ages of children could benefit from this program.
"If you have a valid library card with the Drumheller Public Library, you can take out these backpacks and use them in your home as like a book," LaPlante explained. "Each pack is a play resource with many hours of play ideas (and) activities. They can have it the same length of time that they have a book, so three weeks. We have five of them that have been catalogued and purchased for this specific purchase."
The Drumheller and Area Early Childhood Development Coalition wants to hear from the children who have used the backpacks by filling out a short survey.
"While you are using these backpacks, we would like to know what you think of them. There is a survey in the back of the binder just before you return the backpack back to the library," outlined LaPlante.
