Update June 19 5:00 a.m, the lockdown at the Drumheller Institution has been lifted and inmate visits have resumed.

The Drumheller institution is under a lockdown once again.

The measure was put into place late on Tuesday in the Medium Security Unit so that staff could conduct an exceptional search of the facility.

No reason for the lockdown was given, but a statement from Correctional Service Canada says the policy is to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff and inmates. Normal operations will resume as soon as it is considered safe to do so.

Visits to the penitentiary have been suspended until the search is completed.
