We celebrated Canada's 150th birthday last Saturday and the Canadian Badlands Passion Play will be holding their own 150 celebration this coming weekend.
"Our 150th performance is this coming Sunday," reported Executive Director Vance Neudorf. "We're having birthday cake and a band and party in the big tent before the performance starts for anybody that buys a ticket to that show and we also gave away 150 tickets on July 1."
150 could also, roughly, describe the number of changes that have been made to the Passion Play since the Gospel of Luke production debuted in 2016. In fact, Neudorf said the cast and crew are refering to 2017 as "the year of the new."
"There's so many new people working with us, new people in new roles: our Jesus actor is a new actor, Peter is being played by someone who played Pilate last year," he outlined. "Peter's house has been created, we made the new beach and we put in two new boats there for Peter to work with, new banners, new marketplace, there's just new stuff all over the place."
"500 costumes on our stage and of those, 300 are new to this year," he continued. "There's multiple costume changes. You're backstage and there's things going back and forth and people are in quick change booths all over the place. You're in as one actor and you come out and you go in as another role."
The first Passion Play performance of 2017 is scheduled this Friday evening, July 7 at 6:00 p.m. in the natural amphitheatre beside the Drumheller Ski Hill.
