It's less than four months until the Passion Play site near the Drumheller Ski Hill is packed to the gills for the start of the 2017 Canadian Badlands Passion Play season.
Executive director Vance Neudorf says they've made a few changes this year -- okay, quite a few.
"There's a new Jesus actor coming in, his name is Giovanni Mocibob, you could find him on IMDb. He's an ex-Rosebud guy, he's out there in the wide world now doing movies and different things. We talked to him and he wants to come back and be part of that."
Mocibob takes over the Jesus role from Caleb Gordon, who debuted in 2016 after being an understudy for several years.
"Giovanni's a bit more of a senior actor in the sense of a little more experience," explained Neudorf. "He's coming back in to take the lead role and Caleb will be understudy for this coming year."
Neudorf told 99.5 Drum FM they are also going to continue developing the new Gospel of Luke script, which debuted in 2016.
"There's definitely going to be more highlighting of Peter's journey this time around, as well as Mary, the mother of Jesus will have a bit more of a highlight in what she's going to be doing on stage," he outlined. "Very different, I think, from last year because there's so many new people coming at it."
They're still looking to fill other parts. Auditions will be held in Calgary at the Evergreen Theatre on March 26. Interested actors should check out this link.
This year's performances are scheduled for July 7-9, 14-16 and 21-23. Check the Passion Play website for ticket information.
The Passion Play held its annual general meeting recently and elected three new directors: Lonna Hogan, Geraldine Lee and Dennis Harder. Retiring from the board was Lloyd Huber after 25 years.
