More than 400 people per day are reportedly coming into Canada illegally across the US border and the federal government is doing nothing to stop it.
That charge comes from Battle River-Crowfoot MP Kevin Sorenson, who visited Drumheller last week while on a tour of the riding.
"If you're coming as a refugee from a country like Nigeria or other countries where they're being persecuted, Syria (or) Iraq, they are refugees," he stated. "The real question is when we have 400 people coming across from the United States of America, what is our government doing? They don't even want to call it illegal; they're calling it irregular."
Many of the refugee claimants are worried that the Trump Government will end visa protection for foreign nationals in America.
"Many of these people, we will take in Canada, but we would encourage them to apply legally, to go through the process like everyone else is," said Sorenson. "For those to believe that they can jump the queue, leapfrog over everyone else who's trying to come legally, that is problematic and that is what we expect a government to stand up for."
"We're told now that we have 40,000 refugees that are here (and) we don't even know where they are; they're waiting for their hearing," he noted. "These are issues that we're dealing with daily in Ottawa."
