Friday, December 1 was a SADD day at Morrin School as the local Students Against Destructive Decisions group staged their annual White Out Day.

Students paint their faces as a way to remember the victims of drinking and driving.

"This year was our 7th year running the event in our school; it's one that the kids request year after year," reported Katie Suntjens, the Project REACH co-ordinator for Morrin School. "The messaging really hits home with some of them, especially right around the holiday season; it's kind of a nice reminder to think about their driving behaviours."

The Morrin School SADD chapter has 38 students this year, including four from Delia School, and is one of the largest in the province.

"We attended a conference in Olds on November 23," related Suntjens. "There were schools from Carstairs and Stettler and Olds and Didsbury, I believe, and ours was the largest group there."

While SADD used to stand for Students Against Driving Drunk, Suntjens noted they are keeping up with the times.

"There's new legislation coming in from the province on driving under the influence of marijuana," she told 99.5 Drum FM. "They've been kind of surveying our kids and trying to get feedback from them on what they think should happen in terms of roadside testing and all that."

In North America, one life is lost every 23 minutes due to impaired driving and those numbers mushroom over Christmas and New Year's.
