It's the season for area schools to honour their best and brightest students and Morrin School, north of Drumheller, did just that for the 59th time last Friday, October 19.

This year 34 students from Grades 6 through 12 shared in more than 90 scholarships, bursaries and other awards.

"We had 93 different awards handed out, including certificates and stuff, and our student population is only 135 kids, so it's quite amazing," noted Principal Don Yavis.

The scholarships, cash awards and bursaries totaled more than $7,000. They're not the only honours that Morrin School has received recently.

"The kids have done so much through the WE Schools Foundation that normally, we get to send a dozen kids or so (to WE Day) and they sent us 50 tickets this year," recalled Yavis. "They said we'll send you an extra 30-some tickets, Mrs. Batty said that would take our whole junior and senior high (and) they were floored that we have done as much as we've done through them for such a small school."

"My grandkids come up here, my kids all came to school here, we've got several kids that come up from Drumheller that just love it (and) we've got some kids that moved into the area from Red Deer who can't believe how great it is," he added.

Yavis also thanked the businesses, families and individuals who sponsor the school's awards every year.
