Christmas is done for another year, but merchants in Drumheller are urged to be on their toes when accepting large bills.
Someone has been passing fake $50 Canadian bills around the valley in the last few days.
"I have one in our custody right now: they're not bad looking for fake bills that I've seen in the past," admitted RCMP Constable Rachel Pergunas. "I can see how somebody might grab one and not look at it real close and think it was a legitimate bill."
"What they're doing is they're cutting the transparent strip out of a $5 bill, so they're legitimate transparent strips, that are then being attached to fake $50's," she explained.
While most people who handle money should not be fooled, Cst. Pergunas says the average person might not notice unless they look closely.
"The clerks are definitely paying attention, and anybody who's in a position of accepting cash has been good," she told 99.5 Drum FM. "We're getting the calls from the retailers in town saying somebody's come in and passed this bill."
If you think you may have received a fake $50 bill, contact the Drumheller RCMP at 403-823-7590.
