A group of employees at the Drumheller Institution are going to have an extra meery Christmas this year.
Five of them are joint winners of $1 million from the November 22 Lotto 649 draw.
"It's really a great time of year to award a million dollar prize," stated Kevin van Egdom with Western Canadian Lottery Corporation. "It's never not a good time to award $1 million, but people have extra expenses around the holidays and it's a real nice time of year for it."
The winners are Dale Molyneaux, Amy Diegel, Tara Schellenberg and Louise Kowalchuk of Drumheller and Dawn Bittorf of Strathmore. They just picked up their cheque this week.
"We've had quite a few Alberta winners (this year)," noted van Egdom. "The big one this year was a $60 million prize in the province, which was the biggest we've ever had in Alberta."
While Christmas should certainly be merry for the latest winners, it's also something of a gift to the people who run the lottery.
"Scratch and win tickets are a bit more of a gift idea for Christmas," outlined van Egdom. "Games like Lotto 649, which our recent million dollar win was from, those games tend to really rise and fall along with the jackpots more than the time of year."
The latest winning ticket was purchased at a gas station in Strathmore.
