Is Drumheller really the Dinosaur Capital of the World, as we like to claim? That's what Mayor Terry Yemen asked fellow councilors at Monday night's town council committee meeting.
"To be able to say that we are the dinosaur capital of the world, that's fantastic and we've talked and talked, but we've never ever really made a serious commitment to put dollars at it and I think that's something council has to look at," argued the mayor.
"(In) the United States, when you go down to those western cities and you see them, the whole place is cowboy, it's western," he explained. "You go to Disneyland or that kind of an attraction, where you have a theme and it's common throughout the whole town."
Yemen said visitors to the valley enjoy the many dinosaur statues around town and he thinks it's something to build on when other sectors of the economy are not strong. However, he cautions it can't be just Town Hall that's involved.
"The town is going to be hosting some meetings at the end of the month where we're going to try and bring in all of the different players and see if we can focus and start moving this forward," he told 99.5 Drum FM. "The players are also the people, the retailers, the people that live here, the people that have children that go to school here, it takes a community to make this thing happen."
