On Saturday April 21 during the 4th Annual Drumheller Spring Expo, the RCMP conducted a search, with Citizens on Patrol, in the parking lot of GreenTree Mall to see how many cars were locked up and safe from burglars.
The initiative was called, 'Lock it or Lose it'.
"We thought it would be a good opportunity to raise awareness about auto theft and theft of vehicles," said Constable Katelyn Dagg of the Drumheller RCMP. "We're going around to every vehicle and putting stickers on the windshields to remind people to be auto theft aware."
The parking lot of the GreenTree Mall had roughly 120 cars parked outside of the spring expo.
"Keeping your valuables out of your vehicles or covered up in the trunk," said Cst. Dagg as she gave tips about how to prevent theft of items in your vehicle. "Locking your doors and just being cautious as far as vehicle theft is concerned."
The Constable volunteered some numbers from last years statistics on car thefts. She said that out of 35 total stolen vehicles in 2017, 13 of the vehicles that were stolen, were unlocked. Furthermore, in some cases, the keys were left inside the vehicle.
"Lock it or lose it. That what the stickers say," Cst. Dagg concluded. "Lock your doors in an attempt to prevent the thieves from taking your car."
