A local grocery chain has decided to change it's hours of operation.
Drumheller's Co-op will now be open Monday to Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday and holiday hours are remaining the same.
"A big reason for that is just looking in general to what we were doing in sales within those hours. We took a look and realistically we weren't doing any business in those hours, so it was just a business decision," stated Brent Walker, General Manager for Drumheller Co-op.
Looking at the challenges going into 2017, a good portion of costs aren't going down.
"We're expecting around $150,000 extra cost just in minimum wage (and) I don't have an exact total of what the carbon tax is going to cost us, but it's probably going to be in that area. Expenses aren't going down and margins certainly are not going up. Overall we found that our margins decreased over 2016, so it just makes it more challenging to operate a business in the economy," noted Walker.
As many know 2016 was a downhill year for the oil industry and for Coop, that can hurt their business as most of it relies on the oil patch with their cardlocks.
"The agriculture business has been very strong. We're expecting a very good year again in 2017, so that's part of being diverse in some aspects. If one area is down, the other one can get you through those times," explained Walker.
