Appearing as a special guest at the first Drumheller Dinosaur & Comic Expo might not have been the highlight of the week for Adrestia Cosplay. The weekend before, Adrestia competed in a cosplay contest for best costume -- and won.
"It was the Edmonton Expo. I got the best costume in Journeyman class. With this win now, I actually got pushed into Masters."
Cosplay costume categories are divided into Novice, Journeyman and Masters. Adrestia said that Masters are the very experienced costume makers, and is happy to be included in this category after three years of honing her craft and three wins as a competitor at the Journeyman level.
"I bought a few costumes before I started making my own," she explained. "But, when I first started making my own, it was a great experience and the cosplay community was so great about the whole thing too. You learn so many new things from other people and you meet so many great people too."
The winning costume is called 'Diablo Three Barbarian.' Adrestia elaborated a bit about how she made the costume.
"The whole thing is made out of craft foam with puzzle floor mats for some of the detail work. And you take the foam and have to actually use heat to form it. You mold it into what you need it to be and then you add your detail work and everything like that."
Adrestia first discovered cosplay at a Calgary Expo when she was a teenager. Impressed by the expert cosplay costumes, she slowly began to make her own costumes and entering competitions.
