What started as a temporary fill-in has become a permanent position for the RCMP in Hanna.
Corporal Trent Sperlie, who took over while the detachment searched for a permanent commander, has been given the job.
"The opportunity was just here, so I figured I would go after it," he explained. "This the second kick at the can in Hanna for me and I've enjoyed both times, so when the opportunity came up I thought it would be ridiculous not to pursue that."
Sperlie says having a permanent detachment commander is important to the community especially considering how some rural crime has gone up in recent years.
"I think the big issues out here are the same as for any other community: you can compare Drumheller to here, (we have) just a little lower numbers," he told 99.5 Drum FM. "By far our biggest concern right now is the thefts, the rural thefts and things like that."
Right now, there are six members at the Hanna detachment, one more than their normal complement of five, as one is waiting to transfer out. Sperlie will be making the move to Hanna from Drumheller.
"It's a close knit community; you really do know everybody here," he pointed out. "It's ust a fantastic community and the detachment here has been amazing."
