We're definitely into summer weather in the valley with hot days and thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening. Lightning is blamed for a grassfire near the east end of the Drumheller Valley on Wednesday.
"Just about East Coulee," said Drumheller Fire Chief Bruce Wade. "We responded and Dalum responded with some units and we had it out and under control pretty quick."
"Luckily, there was no big wind with it; it was about the size of three football fields, he elaborated. "There wasn't much rain to go along with it; it's pretty dry out there."
Wade admitted that summer months can be a problem unless there is enough moisture, of which we have seen precious little of late.
"It certainly can be, with lightning strikes," he told Drum FM. "If no rain comes along with it, it's just a light show and it can cause problems, certainly."
Wade added what's needed is a good, two day rain to get the grass green again. There are still no fire restrictions in Drumheller, however Starland County has suspended all controlled burning until further notice.
