A new initiative put forth by the Town of Drumheller is making sure your feline friends are coming home safe.

Now, when a cat owner comes in to get their cat licenced in Drumheller, they will also leave with a collar.

"It is going really well. We are happy to roll our program out for the new year and try to get some people to come out and get their cats licenced, and reap the rewards of a free nylon breakaway collar," explained Lesley Pepper from Bylaw Enforcement for the Town of Drumheller.

The initiative was put in place to not only prevent cats from being lost but to also lessen some of the burden being felt by the Humane Society. The shelter has been at full capacity for a number of weeks now.

"I took a look at some of our stats from last year and I noticed that as far of our feline friends go, our licencing numbers were a little low. I thought this might drum up a bit of business. The cost of licensing is $10.50, and the cost of the collar exceeds that," continued Pepper.

Each tag comes with a unique set of numbers assigned only to you. So if Fluffy the Cat gets out, the person who finds him will know exactly where to return him too.

"We see a lot of cats outside, and our bylaw doesn't allow that. But it is happening, and when these cats, whether they are roaming or whether they get out accidentally, we don't want to see anything bad happening to them. By licencing your pet, if they do get out, we do have a much better chance of reuniting them with their family," concluded Pepper.
