A Hanna woman is one of only six people to receive a Star of Alberta volunteer award for 2016.
Barb Burgemeister received her award Monday night (Dec. 5) in a ceremony at Government House in Edmonton.
"It's quite an honour (and) I'm grateful for my nominee (sic) who put my name in," she told 99.5 Drum FM. "You don't expect to be recognized as a volunteer, but, yeah, it's pretty special."
Burgemeister is President of the Hanna Food Bank Association. She's also a founding member of the Hanna Community Garden, which grows produce for the Food Bank and is involved in a number of other charitable efforts around town.
"When I retired from the farm, I needed something to do so I started volunteering," she explained. "I had volunteered, I guess, before that but not on a regular basis. Since I've retired I've definitely stepped up my volunteering."
"I have a great, great bunch of volunteers and they're just an awesome bunch," she said of her staff at the Hanna Food Bank.
Burgemeister is pleased to see young people taking up volunteering, often under the tutelage of their parents, and she hopes they will continue to give of their time as they grow into adults.
