On Tuesday night, the community of Drumheller and surrounding area had the opportunity to meet and get to know the candidates for the upcoming provincial election.
The Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce with the Three Drums of Wheat Local 20 Teachers Association held the Drumheller Candidates Forum at the Badlands Community Facility on Tuesday.
All of the candidates from the Drumheller-Stettler riding were invited to share their platform and background to constituents in Drumheller and area. In attendance were, Holly Heffernan - Alberta NDP, Nate Horner - UCP, Jason Hushagen - Alberta Independence Party, Mark Nikota - Alberta Party, and Rick Strankman - Independent. Missing from the forum was Greg Herzog - Alberta Advantage Party. The format was each candidate had a five-minute speech to present his or her platform, followed by a dozen or so questions from the audience, wrapping up with a two-minute summary.
Dave Carter attended and was impressed by the candidates. "This was very informative. I think we have a good slate of candidates running so I think it's making tough for some people to decide who they should be voting for. I think a lot of people will leave here this evening making up their mind as to who they want to vote for."
"I felt very comfortable with how some of them spoke and didn't do any kind of negative trash talking. They've kept it to a minimum which was great to see because in previous candidate forums we saw nothing but a lot of rhetoric and trash talking," remarked Carter.
The forum helped Carter make his decision for the election. "I came here not sure who I was going to vote for but I think at the end of this, I've got a sound choice made and am looking forward to how the next two weeks play out."
Over 200 people attended as well as 40 to 50 watched online. You can watch our live coverage from the event here. Advanced polls will open on April 9th and go to April 13th. Election day in Alberta is April 16th.
