Last week was Small Business Week in Canada and th Hanna Chamber of Commerce marked the occasion by holding its annual Business Awards Gala at the Hanna Legion.

"We were so happy to see that everybody took the time to nominate our local businesses," enthused Trisha Sewell of Cactus Corridor Economic Development Corporation. "What we really like about the Business Awards is it's an opportunity for us to celebrate what's great about our business community; and it really gives those local businesses an opportunity to hear the praise and the good things."

Nearly 60 local businesses received nominations this year in one of 11 categories: Business of the Year, Small Business of the Year, Community Spirit, Customer Service-Business, Innovative Entrepreneur, Employees' Choice, Agricultureal Spirit, Mentorship, Rookie Business of the Year, Customer Service-Individual and Chamber Member of the Year.

"We want to recognize everything from the rookie who took that chance to start a new business to the person who is doing something in agriculture, which has been a long standing industry, as well as doing something special like employees' choice (where) employees atually get an opportunity to say why they love working for their business," outlined Sewell.

"It was so great to see so many faces: everybody got a good chance to network," she added. "It makes me so proud to be a part of this community: we like to recognize that it isn't all the negative press we see out there, there's a lot of great things happening in Hanna."
