Update, 9:00 a.m. The mandatory evacuation has been lifted for Special Area 2 near Bindloss.
It's a reminder of how dry things have become in East Central Alberta.
Oyen RCMP and firefighters were called out just after midnight to help evacuate rural residences due to an out of control grass fire. 
The fire is along the north bank of the South Saskatchewan River approximately 120 kilometres south of Oyen and at last word was threatening approximately 15 homes. 
Evacuees were being sent to Bindloss School.
No injuries have been reported. The cause of the grass fire has not been determined.
The Special Areas Board has declared a local state of emergency.
