It's a textbook example of just how dry it is in East Central Alberta and how things can get away from you.
A crop fire started by a combine a few kilometres west of Hanna on Wednesday afternoon, August 23 spread to cover 200 hectares (450 acres) before crews could get it under control.
"This morning we still had a few things smoking and that sort of thing, but it was watched all night, some hot spots were kind of dealt with and there was people watching it the entire night," reported Candice Gordon of the Hanna Fire Department, one of three departments to send vehicles to the scene.
"They've built some fire breaks around the area: there was graders still working this morning when I went by. There's been people working constantly with this
to make sure it's not going anywhere else," she added.
It's believed something on the combine either sparked or heated the grain to the point that it combusted, and the wind then spread it over the field before the farmer could react to put it out.
"The home owner had mowed their grass around their acreage really short, which really helped," noted Gordon. "Anywhere that there was long grass, fence lines and that sort of thing, it quickly spread."
The farm house and outbuildings, along with animals on the property, were spared by the flames and no-one was hurt fighting them.
Gordon reminds people to be extremely careful with fire safety until we get significant moisture.

“We have the Fire under control” says Candice Gordon, Public Information Officer with the Hanna Fire Department.

“The call came in about 2:15pm, it started in a field with a combine, we figure there is about 450 acres burned, we haven’t mapped it yet, but that is just a guesstimate at this point.”

Three fire departments responded to the fire, and they got the fire under control not long after.

“We have hot spots to deal with, the yard was saved, but pretty much 340 degrees around a house is burned” stated Gordon.

“We still have lots of trucks that are out, just keeping hot spots under control, we have graders out, we have other farm equipment out making barriers so that it shouldn't jump any further”.

The Firefighters will be watching it for the rest of the evening, making sure the fire is extinguished.

Highway 9 west of Hanna has been closed due to a grass fire. Firefighters are on site.
