The May Long Weekend is special in Drumheller for a number of reasons: it's the unofficial kickoff to tourist season and most major attractions switch to summer hours.

North of East Coulee, the historic Graham Ranch is getting ready to host its annual free campout at Picture Coulee.

"We've had as many as 150 people there for our 100th anniversary of the ranch and we had the VW Collector Vehicle campout one weekend with about 60 old restored VW's," related owner John Barry Graham. "We've got probably 40 picnic tables, solar lighting, firepit, firewood, outhouse, potable water."

The Graham Ranch has started to make a name for itself as a place to shoot movies, with a number of productions, including Lewis and Clark, The Northlander, Don't Walk Among the Dead, and Consume.

"That started with the same philosophy that we have with the camping," explained Graham. "We were doing all this for free for years and years and it got word of mouth spread (so) that now we're actually getting some productions that are coming in and even paying us a few dollars."

"Bring whatever they would for camping: there's no power, no services, it's wilderness camping," he stressed.

Entertainment will be provided free of charge by The North Sound and Chris Metcs and the Outlets.

"Go past the Atlas Coal Mine to the end of the pavement, go up the left hand hill which is Secondary 564, go about four or five miles (and) there will be a sign there, turn to the left, go into an oilwell road for about three miles on our property and it's right at the back."
