With more snow forecast for the next couple of days, Newcastle Towing has a bit of advice for anyone venturing out of their house: make sure you have an emergency kit in your trunk.

Chris Morgan is the owner of Newcastle Towing. He explained that there's a bit of a debate about what you should have in your winter car emergency kit.

"We have two different ideas on that philosophy. One is your basic first aid kit. Then, there's the one that you want to have if there was high risks of either an accident or freezing temperatures."

If you're staying in the Drumheller valley, a basic emergency kit is probably more than enough, although he did suggest adding a shovel, just in case you need to dig yourself free from a snowbank.

"Your normal first aid kit, as everybody should have, ranges from $25 to $100 and up from there," said Morgan. "We say most people should have that. The more expensive ones have a lot of stuff that you probably wouldn't need in it, but more severe accidents and stuff like that, it would be able to accommodate that."

A basic emergency kit would include items like:

  • Extra clothing
  • Candles
  • A flashlight with extra batteries
  • Maps

"I can tell you that, as a driver, even if I'm outside and I've had my own truck break down and I'm usually dressed for it," said Morgan. "But, when I've got to walk and sit somewhere for an hour, you get cold very fast."
