Drumheller is poised to become Alberta's other go-to tourist attraction, but it's going to take support from the entire community, including Town Hall.
That was the message on Monday as the directors of Travel Drumheller attended town council to ask for continued funding in 2018.
"While Travel Drumheller has been able to implement a volunteer DMF (Destination Marketing Fund) model, which has made us stable as an organization, it still needs to be a partnership with the town so that we can dedicate as much of those dollars as possible to marketing the Valley of Drumheller," stated Carrie Lunde, the organization's new board chair.
"This summer the hotels had excellent attendance, the Royal Tyrrell Museum is set for a record breaking year: people are noticing Drumheller," she added. "Drumheller is on Travel Alberta's priority list and we need to take advantage of the opportunity that is there."
Travel Drumheller is looking for $30,000 from the town to cover operating costs for the coming year. That's down from $40,000 for the last couple years, and Lunde argued it's a bargain compared to what could be gained from the investment.
"The (mountain) parks have been established for well over 100 years; we're still on that kind of 'rising star' trend to be the next major attraction in Alberta if we can have  the support of the town to make Drumheller a place where people want to go and that there's a multitude of experiences that isn't just going to the (Tyrrell) museum and leaving."
Town council will consider the funding request during their 2018 operational budget deliberations.
