The long awaited site of Drumheller's first dog park has been announced and it may surprise you.

In an open house in September, three different sites were proposed to the public, but the chosen site isn't one of those park2Newcastle Dog Park

"So the site is the Newcastle Beach at the park there, and it is to the east of the site (ball diamonds)," explained Communications Officer Julia Fielding.

The site will be directly east of the #2 ball diamond in the Newcastle Ball Park.

"We are going to take the camp kitchen down, we are going to do a little bit of beautification and put a fence around the designated area," said Fielding. "We are going to reroute the footpath, which currently goes up to Newcastle, so that people can still walk from that area down to the beach. There is a little bit of work to be done that will happen in spring. We think it will be a great location for the dog park."

Fielding went on to say that the area made sense in terms of real estate, and that is why it was chosen, even though it was not included in the original presentation.

"When we were at the meeting with the public, none of the three that were proposed really stood out; there were pros and cons for all of them. I think that Administration just had another look around town and thought, well this one would work. Nothing is going to be perfect but this one meets the majority of the needs we are looking for," concluded Fielding.
