A fight between inmates at the Drumheller Institution this week sent one person to hospital for treatment.

"On Sunday, October 21 there was an inmate fight in the Medium Security Unit of the Drumheller Institution," related Kelly Dae Dash of Correctional Service Canada. "The fight did result in one inmate being sent to outside hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries."

The inmate's name and the nature of his injuries have not been made public.

"There were no staff members that were injured during the incident," she continued. "The police were contacted and we are currently investigating the cause of the fight."

Dash reiterated that CSC does not tolerate violence in its institutions, adding that disciplinary action, including possible criminal charges, is possible.

Penitentiary staff also made a drug seizure last week. On Wednesday, October 17 they caught an inmate trying to smuggle crystal methamphetamine and heroin into the institution. The inside value of the seized drugs is $65,000.

Police were notified and will be conducting an investigation.
