The Drumheller Co-op is about to take on a partner.  The directors of the Co-op and the Westview Co-op in Olds have agreed to a merger.

The new entity will be known as the Westview Co-operative Association Ltd.

"Both of our Co-ops are quite strong, so this is just strengthening the equity that we have in both retails," explained Brent Walker, General Manager for Drumheller Co-op. "(It's) good for the membership: they'll have more places they can shop and just in general, it's a strong move for the two retails."

"The (membership) votes are going to happen on October 18 here in Drumheller and October 19 in Olds," he outlined. "The amalgamation, if that proceeds, will take effect on February 1 (2018)."

The new, combined Co-op would give members the abiility to shop or gas up at one of 12 locations in six communities with the same membership number. The communities are Carstairs, Drumheller, Eagle Hill, Linden, Olds and Sundre.

"It's going to strengthen the equity for everybody: both equities would combine into one," stated Walker. "The patronage allocations will remain the same as they've been."

The new company would be run by a board of 14 made up equally of directors from both Co-ops. The amalgamation and restructuring is not expected to cost jobs at either Co-op.
