Customers of Drumhelelr Co-op are in shock after learning the co-operative has decided to shut down its food store.
General manager Brent Walker told 99.5 Drum FM the grocery store has been losing money for the past decade.
"All of our other facilities are doing well, it's just this particular one," he maintained. "To be honest, there's too many food stores in town; that's the bottom line."
While a firm date for closing the supermarket hasn't been set, the wind down will get underway almost immediately.
"We'll start to discount all of our stock starting tomorrow (Feb. 9), 25 per cent off," stated Walker. "We'll do further discounts until it's depleted."
"The biggest thing for us is the staff, and we're trying to do whatever we can to find jobs for them in other areas," he added. "I guess we're hopeful too that it'll make other businesses in town a little bit stronger and again, maybe they'll need the odd employee here and there."
About 30 Co-op employees are affected by the closure. As for Greentree Mall, Walker said they are working with a commercial realtor to find an interested developer to purchase the property.
