After years of back and forth, the Drumheller Legion finally has the confirmation that it's been waiting for -- the branch has been selected for the 2019 Provincial Legion Convention.
The provincial convention will see hundreds of people descend on the Drumheller Valley from May 10 to 12, 2019. Bob Hanna is in charge of organizing the event. He estimates the convention will see over 300 uniformed Legion members and between 150-200 women from the Ladies' Auxilliary visit Drumheller from across the province and the Northwest Territories.
With less than a year and a half to get ready, Hanna is working overtime.
"I have a lot of things to do. I have to organize the Convention. In other words, I need people to help me with the Convention floor. I need volunteers. I need a piper. I need a bugler"
He estimates that he'll need eight uniformed volunteers for the Convention floor, and more than 150 to help organize and make the weekend go off without a hitch.
"I have to organize everything. Transportation, making sure the hotels are OK, transportation from the hotels to the community centre. The Badlands Community Centre, I talked to them and they're 100 per cent. They said they will co-operate 100 per cent with me which I think is great."
The reason Hanna is so nervous about making everything run smoothly? He wants to hold the best Convention the province has ever seen.
"I'm hoping to be really exceptional with this Convention because I want to put Drumheller on the map and show the rest of Alberta that we are good. That we are great."
Hanna will be hosting an informational meeting at the Legion on Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. He encourages anyone interested in helping out, including the Elks, the Rotary Club, the Kinsmen Club and the Masons to attend. If you're unable to attend but want to find out more or volunteer, contact Hanna at 403 823-3881.
