Staff at the Drumheller Institution continue the fight against illegal drugs inside the penitentiary.

Last Friday, December 1, staff members confiscated multiple packages containing drugs from an inmate in the minimum security unit.

The seized contraband includes fentanyl and steroid capsules. The total institutional value of this seizure is more than $30,000.

The RCMP have been notified and the institution is investigating.

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is crediting the combined efforts of correctional officers, a detector-dog team and security intelligence officers for Friday's bust.

A statement from CSC says they use a number of tools to prevent drugs from entering  institutions. These include ion scanners and drug-detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates and visitors.

They've also set up an anonymous telephone tip line for all federal institutions. The toll-free number is 1-866-780-3784.
