A rusty old vehicle can be an eyesore if it is just sitting in your yard, but if you could donate the proceeds from the old junker to a help someone in need, it may be a wise choice.
There is a program out there that will take that vehicle from your property and you get to choose from a vast list of charities to donate to and you get a donation tax receipt.
Kirsten Kuzik from Donate a Car Canada explains, "They get to choose the charity they like best from our list and that's where they see the donation go. Our tow agents travel to Drumheller and pick up vehicles for us."
She also explained that the donation from the vehicle can go right to your own town or village. The charity doesn't even have to be on their list.
"If there is ever a charity that somebody wants to donate to that isn't on our list, they can still can still absolutely do that. We will reach out to that charity and will get them set up. Most of the donors don't care about the tax receipt back, they just want to know it went where they wanted it to."
What happens to these vehicles after they are towed away? How does a person receive a tax receipt for their donation?
"We either auction or recycle every vehicle that is donated. We look at a large number of factors, things like year, make model, mileage, mechanical condition and we determine whether it would be a good fit to run through an auction or if it's better suited to just be recycled for parts and metal."
You can donate to your own community as you see fit. You are the one who knows where it needs to go.
