It's been a long wait for some people who enjoy their daily swim at the Drumheller Aquaplex, but the new and improved indoor pool is getting closer to completion.
The Town of Drumheller has set November 1 for the official grand reopening.
"We have a new date as a result of some construction delays because of additional things we found under the pool deck," explained Darryl Drohomerski, the town's Director of Infrastructure Services. "Even over the last probably three to four weeks, you'd start to see more significant progress being made because now, the demolition part is done."
Crews are installing a custom made stainless steel liner that will convert the indoor pool into a gradual entry for parents with young children. The work has also involved relocating the hot tub and rebuilding the steam room and mens' locker room.
"We had to redo all of the piping and most of the electrical in that area, it'll be all new concrete decking: it was an awful lot of work," reported Drohomerski. "Of course, once you open up some of these old spots that were previously constructed, you tend to find a few surprizes in there and we certainly did."
He figures it put the work schedule back about three weeks. Despite that, Drohomerski says it's great to have a date to look forward to.
"The goal is that if we can get in a bit earlier with the public swim into October, then that's what everyone's working towards."
