Correctional Service Canada is declining to comment on allegations that Fentanyl use is rampant at the Drumheller Institution.
The regional president of the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers claims there were seven overdoses on the powerful opioid at the prison in the last week. He credits the training of officers for the fact that none of them was fatal.
A statement from CSC acknowledges the prevalence of substance abuse problems. It says almost 80 per cent of offenders arrive at federal institutions with some level of substance abuse problem.
However, it does not comment on the latest allegations, saying CSC does not comment on incidents which are the subject of an ongoing investigation.
