Thirty lucky Drumheller organizations received a cheque on Thursday, Sept. 14 when Drumheller Co-op distributed proceeds from their Co-op Til Tapes program.
Drumheller Co-op Controller David Friesen explained the program, which paid out $3,117.27 on Thursday.
"People collect til tapes, calculate the total dollar value, less any GST that's associated with it, and then they take one percent of that total and we pay that back to them. It's a wonderful service that's put a lot of dollars back into our community over the years."
Although some organizations like to wait until the end of the year to tally up their til tapes, receipts can be submitted and proceeds paid out twice a year.
"[We distribute cheques] usually around the end of August, beginning of September and then again at the end of December. On average, we probably issue anywhere from 75 to 80 cheques [per year]."
"From the time we started, we have donated to over 109 community groups. We have paid out over $371,000 back to community groups. It's a big deal to those community groups in Drumheller and surrounding area."
Friesen said that the big fundraiser this time was the Drumheller and District Humane Society, but did not reveal how much they received.
