RCMP have made an arrest and laid charges against 30-year-old Alexandru Sariu, after a boat theft near Beiseker that saw the stolen boat wind up in a ditch.

The Beiseker detachment was notified just before noon on Wednesday that someone in a black truck had stolen a boat and trailer and was last seen entering Irricana, south of Beiseker.

An RCMP officer in a marked cruiser turned west into Irricana when he saw the suspect truck traveling eastbound toward him at a high rate of speed. The driver lost control of the boat and trailer, causing the boat to fly off the trailer into the south ditch.

The officer attempted to stop the truck, but abandoned the effort because of a concern for public safety.

The truck and boat trailer were located in the ditch on Range Road 252 just north of Township 270.  It appeared to have lost control and driven through barbed wire fence. Sariu was tracked down by a police dog and the HAWCS helicopter out of Calgary.

The charges include break and enter and theft, theft over $5,000, possession of stolen property over $5,000, five counts of possession of stolen property under $5,000, possession of break and enter tools, breach of recognizance, dangerous driving, and flight from police.

He is in custody until his court date on August 9 at Provincial Court in Airdrie.
