With the possible exception of parents, probably no-one is happier to see the end of summer than the Drumheller RCMP.
"We had around 40 calls for service over the weekend from Friday to Monday," reported Constable Rachel Pergunas. "There was a series of break and enters into holiday trailers at Newcastle; we had a bunch of people in jail over the weekend, we had an assault with a weapon, a domestic assault, some (court) conditions breaches and weapons offenses, some outstanding warrants and drug possession; and we had one impaired."
The bad news continued into this week, as RCMP and other emergency personnel responded to a motorcycle crash on Drumheller's North Hill on Tuesday.
"A motorcycle driver, driving alone; it looks like he was maybe not familiar with the S-turns and had a little bit too much speed, that's our estimate based on what we saw on the scene," recalled Pergunas. "(He) has non-life threatening injuries, but does appear to have some extensive leg damage."
"That's one of the risks of motorcycles is they're a lot of fun and everything, but if something goes wrong it goes sort of catastrophically wrong," she added. "You don't have any frame around you, nothing to sort of buffer that impact if you do go down."
A Calgary rider who crashed while entering the valley on Highway 56 east of Rosedale in mid-July has died in hospital from his injuries.
