Local RCMP Staff Sergeant Kevin Charles is thrilled that Ignite Your Spark is coming to Drumheller. He sits on one of the committees responsible for organizing the event.
"A spark is anything that is of interest to youth," explained Charles. "It can be a hobby or an extra-curricular activity, it can be a sport, a number of things. So right now we have about 48 different activities that these youth can come and try and see if they want to continue with it outside of the Spark fair."
He said the group can't take all the credit for coming up with the idea.
"They have a very similar fair down in Lethbridge and one of our committee members caught wind of it and brought it to the committee and said 'hey, this is a great idea' so we discussed it and then last winter we started planning it and said 'yeah, let's bring this to the valley, it's a fantastic event.'"
With escalating start-up costs of many activities, the Ignite Your Spark fair could be a great way to try something out without having to purchase equipment and commit to a year-long sport. In addition, Charles said having extra-curricular activities give youth something to do in their spare time.
"That's the whole point of being a youth is to enjoy life and try these new things and new events," pointed out Charles. "So, outside of school, what are you doing with your time? Here's an opportunity for you to try these things and figure out 'hey, I really enjoy that, I want to do this on weekends or after school.'"
The event is being put on by the Drumheller & Area Asset Development Coalition, along with FCSS Drumheller. It's sponsored by the Rotary Club of Drumheller and runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sept. 27.
