2017 has been a busy year for the people at Dinosaur Valley Studios. The former Palcoprep builds life sized skeletons and other exhibits for museums across the country.
One they just finished is an Albertosaurus skeleton for the Royal Alberta Museum in Edmonton.
"We've done several projects for them," stated company president Frank Hadfield. "We've done a Pachyrhinosaur, again with the Tyrrell, several Plestocene exhibits, some ice age horses years back. We have a good relationship with the RAM."
"We're working with the Tyrrell Museum here again on developing their Devonian exhibit: we're mounting quite a large number of specimens for them," he continued. "And we're in the development stages for a bison exhibit that has ties to Drumheller as well."
A couple of the valley's steeper hills doubled as bison jumps, where paleo-indians drove them over the cliffs and butchered them at the bottom.
"We're going back quite far in human terms: this is about 11,500 years ago that this bison was hunted," recalled Hadfield. "Compared to dinosaurs (it's) an eye blink, but for human history that's pretty impressive."
Another major project this year was the skeleton of a humpback whale with flippers 19 feet long!
